Anthems for the 21st Century – The Scotsman

To celebrate 25 years in the business, Jeremy Backhouse’s Vasari Singers took the bold step of commissioning ten composers to write a new anthem each, all of which are now available on this impressive new disc. The most impressive aspect of this collection is the sheer diversity of the music – from the glittering ecstasy of Jonathan Dove’s Bless the Lord, O my soul and simmering passion of Jeremy Filsell’s Mysterium Christi, to the near schmaltzy Give us this day by Ward Swingle. Not all the anthems are first-rate, but despite some uncertain intonation, the performances do justice to the best of them.
